Billboard Insider: Community Friendly Billboards

Media Resources has been at the forefront of digital billboard light mitigation technology since its inception. Our SITELINE™ product line was first to market in providing community-centered light trespass solutions. This article on Billboard Insider delves into how our technology has changed the landscape of digital billboards, permitting, and light pollution:

Digital Billboards have proven very effective, dynamic tools to connect people with products, services, and information. However, the use of digital billboards is still opposed by some based on “light trespass” concerns, concerns that can delay or potentially end the permitting process.

Cheng’s early work showed his design to physically mitigate digital billboard light trespass worked. But it was a client’s needs that led to the development of the first digital billboard equipped with light mitigation technology.

Our client had a legal, great location on a surface street; however, the unit was visible from a neighboring highway which banned digital billboards; his permit was rejected. The client asked if we had a solution.

After a site analysis we confirmed our new technology, VISIONiQ SITELINETM (patent pending) would solve their light trespass issue. MRI then helped them through the permitting process, providing certified light analysis documentation, leading to the installation of a very profitable digital billboard.

Since its introduction, MRI has continuously tuned SITELINETM to improve performance. SITELINETM displays include premium Nichia down angled LEDs, right & left blocking options and complete support for customers from analysis through demonstration units (available to present to regulators).

A news story broadcast by KUTV in Salt Lake City is a great example of how SITELINETM made a good neighbor out of a digital billboard that, while legally permitted, was literally driving people from their homes.

“Our Goal Is To Be Good Community Participants”, Art Woodbuy, Woodbury Corporation on why they made the change from another manufacturer’s digital (shown above) to SITELINETM.

As DDI’s Tony Mariani said, “SITELINETM light mitigation worked exactly as Media Resources said it would… The municipality where these units are located is very satisfied.”

Out-of-Home companies have used SITELINETM displays to obtain permits where digital billboards had been effectively zoned out, and to be good neighbors where light trespass may be a concern. Profitable SITELINETM DOOH locations now dot the continent.

Bill Ripp, VP of all Digital for Lamar says “Media Resources were the inventors of the light trespass mitigation technology for digital Out of Home and have been instrumental in helping many of our markets get locations approved with their SITELINETM product. They have a whole process to help our teams analyze the location and present a custom solution specific to that location.”

As Cheng puts it, “the only people who need to see digital billboards are the target audience driving/walking towards them. Proactively using light mitigation to ensure others are not ‘affected by the light’ is worth considering. SITELINETM improves the industry’s image with the public & regulators alike.”

Light trespass mitigating OOH displays are the solution that will continue to increase in importance in growing the digital OOH category. Taking proactive steps to prevent light trespass concern from becoming a bigger issue just makes sense and creates better neighbors as well!

SITELINETM has been presented to and applauded by all major OOH organizations from the OAAA to IBO to state OOH associations.

Hard Rock Fire Mountain — The Definition of Spectacular LED Displays

Hard Rock Fire Mountain’s grand opening was earlier this month with the ribbon cutting done in front of their new digital displays. The displays by YESCO using Media Resources display technology truly deserves the term spectacular!

When we saw the artist’s rendering, we were blown away by the innovation. Fortunately for us, the fact that it was so innovative was key in the decision to go with Media Resources. After all, with over 50 years of custom signage experience throughout the Americas, who knows more?

Hard Rock, Artists Concept

Hard Rock Spectacular Flames

The display consists of seven custom built undulating columns using our VISIONiQ 10mm SMD modules. The center column is 46′ 2.3″ high x 5′ 3″ wide (1408p x 160p) with six other columns of decreasing height.

To ensure operation is not compromised by system issues, it was built with VISIONiQ’s industry leading Redundancy Systems.

  • 2-way real time data flow for all modules
  • Redundant scanning cards
  • Redundant photocells with auto dimming sensor
  • Redundant controller

Since it would be viewed so closely, manufacturing precision had to be extremely tight. All the columns had to match perfectly from the steel supports to the cabinets to the module mounting.

Hard Rock Construct

Kudos to the team that came up with this concept. We’re proud to have helped it come to life. It truly is a work of art and a spectacular LED digital display.

Historic Merced Theatre Marquee Goes Digital

The installation of the Merced Theatre’s new totally digital marquee — in color and with full video — is complete. Never fear, though, its iconic Art Deco and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture remains untouched.

CK Signs chose Media Resources to manufacture the new digitals because of their extensive experience with high resolution digitals (10mm RGB used here). Their ability to manufacture displays that fit the marquee’s flat and curved sections was also key in the selection.

Another factor was Media Resources’ optional edge-to-edge LED cabinet (no perimeter frame around the image). This enabled CK Signs to mount the displays within the marquee’s original frames for a minimal transition from Art Deco to digital.

CK Sign Services has extensive experience helping corporations maximize signage potential. CK Sign Services is a Minority Owned, Native American owned company, and a Preferred Vendor for the Chickasaw Nation as well as the Choctaw Nation.

Media Resources Inc. is an integrated sign services and manufacturing company providing digital LED displays3D fabrication, large format printing, and sign installation services to the sign and display industry.

CBS KUTV Report — SITELINE™ Solution for Bright Billboards

Last year Woodbury Corporation, a real estate development firm in Utah, contracted with Compass Outdoor to erect, own and operate a digital billboard to promote Woodbury commercial properties.  Unfortunately, light intruding into the neighboring subdivision from the display was too bright for its residents.

According to CBS affiliate KUTV, the brightness of the display, particularly at night, was so bothersome to the neighborhood that some people started selling their homes to escape it. “It’s like I moved to Vegas” said homeowner Chris Booth.

Other neighbors tried to fight back by contacting their state senator, some even considering a lawsuit. Though, since everything had been done legally there seemed to be little recourse.

Woodbury Homes Find Technological Solution in Canada

While not legally required to do anything, as good corporate citizens Woodbury and Compass took their complaints to heart and began a search for a solution that would work for all parties. That search led to Canada and light shielding technology developed by Media Resources – SITELINE™.

SITELINE™ technology (patent pending) enables the intended viewers to see the digital billboard image without creating light pollution in adjacent areas, like residential spaces. As CBS reporter Jeremy Harris said on site, “It seems the lights have been turned off, at least from this angle.”

SITELINE billboards barely visible

“Night and day difference, literally,” said Lara Huff, who lives near the sign. “I’m really impressed with Woodbury; they really showed a lot of integrity here.”

Even Senator Dan McRay was pleased, saying “They had no legal obligation to change the billboard, and they did it anyway. To go to that extent on behalf of the community, I’m hopeful that other developers will follow this example.”

Now, “Drivers can still see the electronic billboard’s advertisements, but the light is no longer shining on the Bradbury Meadows neighborhood” —Jeremy Harris, KUTV News.

Digital LED Sign Retrofit – Top 3 Reasons to Retrofit

Digital LED Sign Retrofit – Top 3 Reasons to Retrofit

What do you think a Digital LED Sign retrofit of your business signs could save you? The City of Ottawa expects to save $4 million annually by 2020 because of their LED street light retrofit.

Carling Ave in Ottawa, before and after retrofitting

To see if an LED signage retrofit makes sense for your company talk to an expert with experience in all forms of lighting. Media Resources is such a company.

Media Resources offers coast-to-coast coverage and has over 50 years of experience. Our pledge says it all – “Promises Made. Promises Delivered”. We’re happy to say many of our clients have been with us for over 40 years.

Our Digital LED Display division has worked with light emitting diodes for decades. If you would like our LED lighting experts to help in your retrofit decision, please give us a call!

1. Produce Significant Savings

  • Improved Energy Efficiency: You hear this daily, LED lighting yields significant energy cost savings. Results vary depending on numerous factors, but tests by one of Media Resources suppliers, Global Lux, show that retrofitting a sign from fluorescent lamps to their Literod LED lamp series can save 61% in energy costs.
  • Less Maintenance: LED lighting typically requires maintenance only once every 5-10 years, compared to annual or quarterly service trips (sometimes more frequently) associated with more traditional lighting systems. This service reduction can significantly add to your bottom line.
  • Longer Lifespan: A well-fabricated LED light can last a decade or more – significantly longer than the lifespan associated with traditional lighting. They also don’t break as easily meaning lower costs from storm damage and mishandling.
  • Financial Incentives: Various financial incentives have been given for upgrading to Energy Star rated products like LEDs. Check with your local provider to see if you’re eligible.
  • Quick Return on Investment: Payback periods for LED installations range on average from 1-3 years, meaning it doesn’t take long for your business to start enjoying financial returns (payback periods vary).
2. Better Reflect Your Company’s Image

  • Hot Spot Elimination: We’ve all seen fluorescent hot spots, uneven lighting, and of course the frequent dark spots caused by lamp burnout. LEDs can easily be arranged to eliminate hot spots. And with a lifespan that exceeds fluorescents many times over, burn outs are of minimal concern.
  • Clean, Clear Light: LEDs produce a crisp, clean light. Traditional fluorescent bulbs often produce a less desirable yellow look which can also shift the colours in your graphics.
  • Instant Light: Fluorescents and other types of traditional lighting typically take a while to warm up to full illumination, whereas LEDs are instantly on!
  • Better Cold Weather Performance: Cold temperatures have little effect on LED lights. Light output for fluorescents, and many types of neon, drops significantly as temperatures go down, particularly below freezing.
  • Visibility You Can Count On: LED lighting is less prone to failing, meaning your business signage remains illuminated and visible to more prospective customers.
3. Easy, Environmental, Safe, The Future

  • Relatively Easy Conversion: By replacing your existing bulbs with LED lamps, your signage solutions expert can achieve LED retrofitting with minimal disruption to your business operations.
  • Reduced Environmental Impact: (1) Unlike fluorescent lighting and neon, LED illumination does not contain hazardous chemicals phosphor or mercury. (2) LED signs use so much less power that they reduce the strain on the power grid which has significant environmental advantages.
  • Safer: LED lights run on extremely low voltage compared to traditional neon systems that run on as many as 15,000 volts, thus reducing the risk of fire.
  • The Future is LED: LED lighting components have become standardized and are becoming more readily available than traditional lighting, which is increasingly being mandated out of existence.

Don’t be left in the dark. See how an LED retrofit would benefit your company, fill out the contact form below and we’ll be in touch to discuss.
